Valentine’s Day Fruit Kabobs for Kids

If there’s one thing I’ve learned when it comes to feeding kids, it’s that kids love to eat foods cut into fun shapes. That’s where these heart shaped fruit kabobs come into play. Three different types of melons are cut into hearts and threaded onto skewers for an adorable snack that’s perfect for Valentine’s day…or any day!

Many kids absolutely love fresh fruit, so this is a great way to fill them up with something healthy and nutritious! When their stomachs are full of nourishing foods, they won’t feel as drawn to the candy and other treats, and there won’t be quite as much room for all that sugar. This can help regulate their mood, too!

Why We Love This Heart Shaped Fruit Kabobs

  • Simple to make: These heart-shaped fruit skewers couldn’t get much easier! You just need a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the hearts, then attach them to heart-shaped plastic or bamboo skewers. The kids can help, too!
  • Healthier treat: Since these Valentine fruit skewers only contain fresh melons, they’re a fantastic option for a healthy Valentine’s Day! The fiber in the fruit will help your little ones stay full for longer too!
  • Perfect for Valentine’s Day: The heart shape is a fun treat for a Valentine’s Day party or as a special breakfast on the day. They’re also just a great way to share a little love or serve more fruit in general!

Ingredient Notes

  • Melons: I used a combination of watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe. Feel free to adjust to the melons available in your grocery store.

Valentines Fruit Kabobs – Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cut the watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe into ½ inch slices. Use a small heart shaped cookie cutter to cut out desired number of hearts from each fruit.
  2. Using plastic or wooden skewers, thread the hearts onto each skewer. I added three, but you can add more depending on the length of your skewer. Serve and enjoy!

RECIPE TIPS

  • Make sure you cut the fruit into half-inch slices. If they are too thin, they tend to fall off the skewers and if they’re too thick, they can be tricky for little mouths to eat!
  • Feel free to try different melons depending on what’s available in your area!

Recipe FAQs

What are the best skewers to use for heart fruit kabobs?

I recommend using skewers that aren’t very pointy on the end! Little kids have a hard time navigating the pointed ends and are likely to poke themselves in the mouth. I like to use plastic skewers especially since the heart shape serves as a handle too. Lollipop sticks would be a great choice too!

What size cookie cutter did you use to make the heart shaped fruit?

There are quite a few options. I recommend choosing a heart shaped cookie cutter that’s approximately 1.5 to 2 inches wide to make sure the pieces are the right size for kids to handle. Mini cookie cutters are usually the perfect size for this!

Are bamboo skewers safe for kids?

Bamboo is a safe material for kids, but younger children can have a hard time holding the skewers, and they’re much more likely to poke themselves with the sharp ends! It’s much easier for kids to hold skewers with handles or skewers that have a larger section that can grip them with their palms.

I love to use heart-shaped plastic skewers because they can hold the heart, and there’s no sharp tip to poke them. Unfortunately, I bought these skewers years ago and haven’t been able to find the same ones anywhere, but there are many different designs out there, like unicorns, stars, and more. Plus, plastic skewers are washable, so you can use them again and again!

Storage Guidelines

  • Since these skewers are made with freshly cut fruits, they’re best eaten within the first 24 hours. Make sure you store them in an airtight container in the fridge, or consider wrapping them in plastic wrap.

Serving Suggestions

Whether you’re hosting a special party or want to make your kid’s meals more exciting, these Valentine fruit skewers are the perfect choice. They would pair perfectly with homemade Greek yogurt fruit dip or these other recipes, too.

Recipe Variations

  • Adjust the fruits: These Valentine’s Day fruit kabobs would be great with your kid’s favorite fruits! Try adding blueberries or raspberries between each heart or incorporate fresh strawberries, green grapes, pineapple, papaya, or even sliced apples.
  • Add chocolate: Most kids will eat plenty of chocolate on Valentine’s Day, so this is entirely optional. It can be fun to serve the skewers with a melted chocolate drizzle or place a chocolate-covered strawberry right in the middle!
  • Make one big fruit heart: If you have a large heart-shaped cutter, you can choose to make a large slice! This can be a fun handheld option to help eat more fruit in general.
  • Try different shapes: Instead of hearts, you can also use different cutters to make stars, flowers, and more.
