2 Ingredient Ranch Dip recipe

I think it might be a rule that all kids love ranch dip. We could easily eat it with almost every meal, but the store-bought dressings or even seasoning blends are loaded with not-so-nice additives like MSG (yes, really), maltodextrin, and a slew of gums, stabilizers, and preservatives. Plus, they’re packed with excess sodium, so it’s always best to make your own if you can.

This homemade ranch dip has that classic ranch flavor you know and love, but it’s made with blended cottage cheese for extra protein and my secret weapon: homemade low sodium ranch seasoning. It’s so simple, and perfect served up in a number of ways!

Ingredient Notes

The two ingredients needed to make the healthy ranch dip.
  • 2% cottage cheese: This is the main ingredient in this homemade ranch dip! After blending, the cottage cheese is super thick and creamy, like mayo, but with way less fat and way more protein. So easy!
  • Low sodium ranch seasoning: Store-bought ranch dip is very high in sodium, and not always the best option for kids. I make my own low sodium ranch dressing with powdered milk and dried herbs and spices, like onion powder, dried chives, and black pepper. It’s way healthier than the ranch packets from the store!

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Blend cottage cheese in a high power mini blender or food processor until smooth and creamy. Stir in 1 1/2 tablespoons ranch seasoning. Feel free to add a bit of lemon juice too if desired. Serve immediately, or let it sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to come together.

RECIPE TIPS

  • Let it rest. It takes time for the dried herbs to rehydrate and release their flavor. I like to let this cottage cheese ranch dip set overnight for maximum flavor.
  • For thicker dip: If you prefer your dip on the thicker side, use a higher fat percentage of cottage cheese.

Recipe FAQs

How can you make ranch dip higher in protein?

Cottage cheese is my go-to ingredient for adding more protein to anything from waffles to ranch dip. It’s amazing how luscious and creamy it gets after blending, yet it’s low in fat and high in protein! This makes it a great way to add in a little extra protein for picky eaters who shy away from eggs or chicken, but it’s a nutritious option for the whole family.

Can you make this ranch dip with store-bought ranch seasoning?

Technically, yes, but I do not recommend it. Even if we ignore the MSG, gums, thickeners, and preservatives in the ingredient list, store-bought Hidden Valley Ranch packets are so high in sodium!

Kids are especially sensitive to sodium, and babies and toddlers should have a limited amount. If you use homemade ranch dip mix, you can leave out the salt or add it to taste, which is much better for everyone.

Can you use sour cream?

Yes, you can make ranch dip with many different bases including sour cream, plain yogurt, or even a little mayo, but none of them will add as much protein as cottage cheese. I find 2% cottage cheese is the best option!

Serving Suggestions

Serve this healthy ranch dip in place of store-bought ranch dip with…

We also enjoy this dip drizzled in a wrap with grilled chicken, lettuce, avocado and shredded cheese!

Recipe Variations

  • Try different bases: There’s nothing quite as high-protein as cottage cheese, but you can also make this dip with a different creamy base, like plain Greek yogurt (this will be more tangy) or sour cream and a little mayo.
  • Add some fresh herbs: To really make your homemade ranch dip pop, add some minced fresh dill or chives.
  • Thin it out: If you prefer a thinner dip, feel free to add a little whole milk.
