Ingredient Notes

Ingredients required for the red, white and blue fruit kabobs.
  • Watermelon: For the stars at the top of the skewers.
  • Apples: These are the “white” part. Use any color apple you like. I prefer Cortland or Gala as they don’t brown as quickly.
  • Lemon: To keep the apples from turning brown.
  • Fresh blueberries: This is one of the only blue fruits, and they fit these patriotic fruit skewers perfectly.
  • Fresh strawberries: These add an extra pop of red and also help keep the star-shaped fruits on the skewers.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cut the watermelon into slices about 1 inch thick. Using a small star cookie cutter, cut out 8 stars.

RECIPE TIPS

  • Make sure that you don’t cut the watermelon or apple slices too thin, or the stars will be too thin to thread onto the skewers. This is especially the case for the apples. If the apple stars are too thin, they might break in half when you try to slide them on the skewers.
  • Use the thinnest skewers you can find to make it easier to thread on the fruit stars without them breaking.
  • These skewers are best served fresh since the apples do start to brown a bit when sitting for a few hours.

Recipe FAQs

Can you use different fruits?

You can use any red, white, or blue fruits, but you want to bear in mind that the fruit needs to be sturdy enough to withstand being poked onto wooden skewers. Bananas are a great option for white fruit, but they don’t handle being cut with a cookie cutter very well.

Other red fruits, like raspberries, are not suitable for being on a skewer, and cherries need to be pitted first. Feel free to switch it up since it’s a fun way to get kids to try something new!

Can you make small kabobs?

Of course! You can make these patriotic skewers in any size you’d like. Most kids like the longer skewers I made in the recipe, but little ones may prefer a smaller skewer with just one fruit of each color. Make them whatever size you’d like!

Are skewers safe for kids?

I totally understand if you’re reluctant to hand a small child a skewer with a sharp, pointed tip! I often like to use skewers with flat ends to avoid the poky part. These are easier to find online than in grocery stores. Another option is to use the regular bamboo skewers, assemble the kabobs, and then trim off the sharp point right before serving. This makes the patriotic kabobs easy to make but poke-free.

Storage Guidelines

Since the apples tend to start browning within a few hours, it’s best to serve these skewers fresh. If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container for a day or so.

Serving Suggestions

These red, white, and blue fruit skewers are healthy enough to be served any time of day! Since they are handheld, these kabobs make a nice appetizer, side dish, or healthy dessert on any patriotic holiday.

They can either be served on their own or with a little chocolate drizzle (white chocolate would be fun too!), homemade yogurt fruit dip, 4 ingredient peanut butter dip, or other preferred dip!

Recipe Variations

  • Make without cookie cutters: If you don’t have star cookie cutters on hand, try slicing the melon and apple into little circles or triangles.
  • Simplify the fruit: These Fourth of July fruit kabobs need only three colors: red, white, and blue. Feel free to use just the strawberries, apple, and blueberries to have fewer pieces to cut.
  • Replace the white: Since there are usually so many treats on July 4th, I usually make these kabobs with only fresh fruit. If you don’t mind adding a sweet treat, you can replace the apple stars with mini marshmallows instead.
