Healthy Fudgesicle Recipe

If you’ve ever had chocolate avocado pudding, then you understand just how delicious this combination can be! The avocado stands back and lets the chocolate be the star of the show, making these avocado fudgesicles taste like a rich and fudgy dessert.

My kids go wild for them, and honestly, so do I. As a Registered Dietitian, I especially love that they’re a more nutritious alternative to store-bought fudge pops since they’re rich in healthy fats and antioxidants. They’re our new favorite chocolate popsicles!

Why We Love This Recipe

  • Loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats
  • Easy to make ahead for refreshing summer treats
  • Rich and creamy chocolate flavor – no avocado flavor in sight!
  • Naturally allergy-friendly (can be made dairy-free, nut-free, gluten-free)
  • Creamy and rich thanks to avocado chocolate pudding
  • My favorite way to serve avocado to picky kids

Ingredient Notes

Individually portioned ingredients for the avocado fudgesicles.
  • Ripe avocados: Remove the skin and pit to blend the avocados until smooth.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: For a rich chocolate flavor without the sugar.
  • Milk or milk alternative: To thin out the chocolate avocado pudding mixture.
  • Maple syrup: For sweetness. Use 100% pure maple syrup.
  • Vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt (optional): This will really bring out the flavors in these homemade fudgesicles.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Place the avocados in the food processor and blend until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the cocoa powder, milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract and salt, if using. Blend on high until the ingredients have broken down.
  3. Give the pudding a good stir and continue blending until very smooth and creamy.
  4. Taste and adjust according to personal preference. You may wish to add more milk if you want the pudding to be a thinner consistency, more maple syrup if you’d like it to be sweeter or more cocoa powder if you want it to be richer in flavor.
  5. Pour mixture into your popsicle molds. Add wooden sticks (if required). Freeze for at least 6 hours or until frozen solid. Serve frozen and enjoy!

RECIPE TIPS

  • If you want more sweetness without the extra added sugar, you can also add about 4-5 pitted Medjool dates. Just be sure to soak them in boiling hot water for at least 30 minutes to soften them. Then blend them along with the avocados in step 1 until smooth and broken down. You may need to add some extra milk if you add the dates.
  • The number of pudding pops this recipe makes will depend on the size of your popsicle mold.
  • To make these fudgesicles extra creamy, you can also use full-fat coconut milk instead of regular milk.
  • To remove the popsicles for serving, it can help to run a little hot water on the outside of the molds to loosen them. Just be careful not to overdo it!

Recipe FAQs

What can you use instead of maple syrup?

To keep things simple, I usually use maple syrup to sweeten this creamy fudgesicle recipe. But there are plenty of other options to consider! If you’re making them for kids over 2 years old, you can use your favorite honey.

For no added sugar, you can also blend in pitted dates for extra sweetness and fiber! Another option is to add a ripe banana, but that will change the flavor profile, and you may need to thin out the mixture to get the right texture.

Are fudgesicles healthy for kids?

I’m a big believer in moderation. If we eat well 80% of the time, it’s okay to enjoy our favorite flavors 20% of the time! This includes our kids. We need to model moderation for them to help them develop a healthy relationship around food. So yes, kids can certainly enjoy a few store-bought fudgesicles from time to time.

But if you have a little time, you can ditch the refined sugars or artificial sweeteners, stabilizers, and additives and make a treat that will nourish your little ones. Plus, this recipe is allergy-friendly, so it’s a safe option for kids who can’t enjoy the store-bought options.

How long do homemade avocado popsicles last in the freezer?

After 2-3 months, your popsicles may begin to develop ice crystals and start to taste like the freezer. For the best flavor, enjoy your homemade fudge popsicles within the first 1-2 months.

Storage Guidelines

  • Once frozen solid, wrap the individual chocolate avocado popsicles in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months.

Serving Suggestions

These healthy fudgesicles are intended to be enjoyed as a refreshing treat or snack (great for a hot summer day)!

If you want to make them even more filling, offer up a tray of fresh berries and fruit or serve along with some protein like some yogurt. They’ll taste wonderful with the chocolate flavor and add extra fiber and nutrients.

Other Fun Ideas

  • Add some mix-ins: After blending the ingredients together in a food processor, consider folding in a few fun add-ins to make them your own! Mini chocolate chips or chopped nuts would be a great option for older children. We also enjoy them with unsweetened coconut shreds, and you can even add small bites of strawberries or raspberries for a fruity pop!
  • Add a different extract: Replace the vanilla extract with almond extract, coconut extract, or even a little mint extract for a totally different flavor profile.
  • Incorporate peanut butter: Who doesn’t love that chocolate peanut butter combo? Blend in some natural peanut butter with the pudding mixture or drizzle some drippy peanut butter on after the popsicles are frozen and allow it to freeze and set. Such a perfect summer treat!
