Ingredient Notes

Ingredients to make the banana snowman snack.
  • Bananas: Get some fresh, ripe, yet firm bananas and cut them into 1/2-inch thick slices.
  • Strawberries: Cut the stem off to make a little strawberry hat for each of the snowmen.
  • Green grapes: Slice the grapes in half to become pom poms for the hats! You could use a mini marshmallow for this, too.
  • Baby carrots: Trim the carrots into small triangular slivers for a classic carrot nose.
  • Mini chocolate chips: It’s important to use small chips to fit on the slices of banana. You can use stevia-sweetened chips as a lower sugar alternative.
  • Skewers: Use wooden skewers, plastic skewers, paper lollipop sticks, or popsicle sticks as the spears.

How to Make a Banana Snowman on a Stick

  1. Slice the bananas into slices that are ½-inch thick. Slice the green stem off the strawberries so that the bottom is flat.
  2. Carefully, poke a skewer through three banana slices so that the round slices are facing towards you. Then create the snowman hat by poking on a strawberry with the pointy part pointing upwards. Next, slide on a grape half with the flat side facing downwards.
  3. Poke the mini chocolate chips into the top banana slice for eyes and 2-3 chocolate chips into the second banana slice for buttons. Gently poke a thin sliver of the carrot underneath the eyes.
  4. Place on a serving plate and serve immediately.

RECIPE TIPS

  • Make sure that you cut the banana slices thick enough or else they’ll split in half when you try to slide them onto the skewers. It’s best to use the slices in the middle of the banana since they’re typically the largest.
  • You might want to keep some extra bananas on hand in case any of the banana slices break when skewering them.
  • Avoid using an overly ripe banana for this recipe since you need the banana slices to be firm enough to stay on the stick and not too mushy when handled.
  • If serving these banana snowmen to small children, watch them carefully if they’re eating from a skewer. Alternatively, you can skip the skewer and just build the banana snowman on a plate.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make these banana snowmen ahead of time?

Ideally, these banana snowmen are best served immediately since the banana starts to brown and turn a bit sticky if made too far in advance. You can assemble the ingredients in advance to save time later on.

How do you serve banana snowmen?

It’s best to lay the snowman flat on a serving tray to keep the soft bananas from sliding off the sticks, but they can be served any time of day. They’re a fun snack or side dish to go with lunch or dinner, a healthy dessert for the kids, or a tasty side dish for breakfast! Serve with French toast, pancakes, waffles, and even baked oatmeal. This would be a fun idea to tie into your Elf on the Shelf antics, too…

Can kids make these banana snowmen?

Yes! This is such a great activity for kids of all ages. Young kids may need some help, but this is really a wonderful fine motor activity. Set out the ingredients in separate bowls and have your kids stick them together for snack time. They’ll want to make a whole bunch!

Storage Guidelines

  • These snowmen tend to brown at room temperature, so serve them right away for best results.

Serving Suggestions

These banana snowmen are great healthy treats to serve for snack, or offer them as an appetizer or dessert at your kid-friendly holiday party! They’d be great for breakfast, too.

Serve them along with yogurt or a fruit dip (try this 4-ingredient peanut butter dip) to take the snowmen for a swim, or cut out some cheese stars or snowflakes and place them around the snowmen for extra protein.

You could also stick them into a stack of mini blueberry pancakes or 3-Ingredient protein waffles for a fun and healthy Christmas breakfast!

Recipe Variations

  • Freeze them: Cover the banana slices in plain yogurt or melted white chocolate chips and freeze them on a parchment-paper-lined tray. Place the chocolate chips into the yogurt coated bananas before freezing, and they’ll set in place. So cute!
  • Add arms: Stick thin pretzel sticks into the sides of the middle banana slice to give your snowman arms!
  • Add a scarf: Use some thinly cut fruit leather and wrap it around the bottom of the top banana slice for a little scarf.
  • Draw shapes: Instead of chocolate chips, you can pipe melted chocolate onto the snowmen to customize them even more.
