Why We Love This Frozen Treat

  • Made with just two wholesome ingredients: bananas and Greek yogurt (plus desired toppings)
  • A delicious treat for those hot summer days
  • Will last for months in the freezer
  • Naturally low sugar (to avoid the sugar crash)
  • Easy enough that the kids can make them, too!
  • Require minimal effort and are ready in just a few hours
  • Easy to customize with your favorite toppings
  • Fit a variety of dietary needs (gluten-free, egg-free, nut-free)

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients to make frozen yogurt banana pops.
  • Ripe bananas: Unlike making your favorite banana bread, these banana popsicles need perfectly ripe bananas – not too soft, not too firm.
  • Vanilla Greek yogurt: I recommend using a low-sugar variety when possible, but you can use any flavor you like. Strawberry yogurt is a tasty option too!
  • Toppings: This is where you really get to go wild! Add rainbow sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, coconut flakes, peanut butter, chopped nuts, etc. You can even drizzle some melted chocolate over top for an extra crunch.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. Halve and peel each banana. Insert a popsicle stick into each banana half so that it’s secure.
  2. Get out desired toppings for the yogurt pops.
  3. Place the yogurt into a bowl (or you can also do it over the tub of yogurt). Using a small spatula or spoon, spread each of the banana halves with an even layer of yogurt until the top and sides of the banana are well coated and no longer exposed. Allow the excess yogurt to drip back into the bowl or yogurt container.
  4. Evenly coat the banana pops with sprinkles, chocolate chips, chopped nuts or toppings of your choice.
  5. Place yogurt covered bananas on the parchment lined baking sheet. Freeze until the yogurt has hardened and toppings are secure, about 2 hours. Allow additional time if you would like the banana to be frozen through. Serve frozen and enjoy!

RECIPE TIPS

  • Use ripe bananas that are still slightly firm. In this case, you don’t want overripe bananas since they will be too soft and mushy, which will make it harder for the popsicle stick to stay in place.
  • Don’t poke the popsicle stick too far into the banana or it will poke through the other side and the banana may break. Instead, poke it into the banana half about an inch.
  • Depending on the yogurt you choose, you can try dipping the banana pop into the yogurt, but if it’s too thick and creamy, the banana may get stuck and fall off the popsicle stick. I found it easier to spread the Greek yogurt in a thick layer over the banana with a small spatula.
  • If you don’t want to use vanilla Greek yogurt, you can also use plain Greek yogurt mixed with a bit of maple syrup or honey and vanilla extract. Other flavors like strawberry or blueberry would be fun too!

Recipe FAQs

How long do frozen bananas last?

Once your banana pops are frozen solid, they will last about 2-3 months in an airtight container in the freezer. It’s very important to make sure the container is fully airtight to avoid ice crystals and developing a stale flavor. They can stay frozen longer, but the flavor won’t be quite as nice.

What’s the best type of yogurt for frozen bananas?

I prefer to use Greek yogurt because it sticks better to the bananas and adds a little extra protein. If you choose regular yogurt, you may be able to actually dip the banana in the yogurt, which isn’t the case with the Greek yogurt. When possible, look for a low-sugar variety.

What can you use instead of yogurt?

The yogurt is the glue to this simple recipe, but there are some other options. First, if the dairy is an issue, try using a non-dairy yogurt. Another option is to brush on some coconut cream. This is a great way to add some healthy fats to your little one’s diet!

For a sweeter treat, melt chocolate chips and stir in a small amount of coconut oil. Pour it over the bananas instead of brushing. It will take on the texture of those Magic Shell ice cream toppings. Such a fun treat!

Storage Guidelines

  • These bananas should be frozen solid at all times and not given a chance to thaw or they will become mushy. Freeze them in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months.
  • Once completely frozen, consider wrapping each one with plastic wrap for even greater protection. This will also keep them from sticking to each other in the freezer.

Topping Ideas

A plain yogurt-dipped banana tastes great on its own, but they’re way more fun with some crunchy or creamy toppings! The sky’s the limit here. Feel free to add any toppings or drizzles you think your kids will like.

  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Drizzle of peanut butter
  • Chopped nuts
  • Sprinkles
  • Shredded coconut
  • Hemp hearts
  • Granola
  • Crispy brown rice cereal
  • Powdered freeze-dried fruits
  • Small pieces of fresh fruits (chopped strawberries, kiwi, mango)

Recipe Variations

  • Change the size: Young kids might not need the entire banana half. You can cut large bananas into quarters to make a smaller treat.
  • Try other fruits: Bananas have the perfect texture for these sweet treats, but you can also try this activity with fresh strawberries to switch it up.
  • Make yogurt banana bites: Ditch the stick and slice the banana into thin rounds (1/2 inch thick). Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, brush with creamy yogurt, and add your favorite toppings. Freeze for a bite-sized snack for a nice warm day!
