Homemade Granola Cups with Yogurt and Berries

My kids absolutely love these healthy granola cups with yogurt and berries! They’re constantly amazed that the granola is the cup itself, which is so much more fun than just eating breakfast like normal. These are especially great for picky eaters who are reluctant to try new foods.

The homemade granola breakfast cups are sweet and nutty with a mild peanut butter banana flavor, and the yogurt mixture is creamy and delicious. They just might be the best way to serve granola ever!

Why We Love These Healthy Yogurt Granola Cups

  • Healthy breakfast for kids: Unlike regular breakfast cereals, which are loaded with processed ingredients, these mini granola cups are sweetened with a bit of maple syrup and peanut butter. The oats are a great source of fiber, and the peanut butter adds healthy fats to support their growing brains. Plus, the yogurt and berries will also offer protein, healthy fats, probiotics, antioxidants and lots of vitamins and minerals for a balanced breakfast or snack. They’re a great alternative to prepackaged cereal!
  • Easy to make: Although there’s a little extra effort to bake these breakfast granola cups, they come together really quickly! Just mix the oat mixture together, form the cups, then bake for about 20 minutes. Let them cool on the pan before removing and serve!
  • Make ahead for busy mornings: Since one batch makes nine granola cups, you can easily serve these yogurt and granola bites all week long. They’re such an easy way to get breakfast on the table quickly or take them on the go!

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients required for granola cups with yogurt and berries.
  • Rolled oats: It’s best to use regular rolled oats, also called old-fashioned oats.
  • Mashed banana: Use a very ripe banana. It’ll act like oil to glue the granola mixture together.
  • Natural peanut butter: Look for an unsweetened version. Almond butter or sunflower seed butter will work, too.
  • Pure maple syrup: This is a great natural sweetener that will add flavor without making the granola too sweet. Honey is a good alternative for older kids.
  • Cinnamon: Cinnamon adds a really appetizing aroma that will make this healthy snack even more enticing.
  • Salt: You need just a pinch of salt to highlight the flavors in the granola.
  • Greek yogurt: Feel free to use high-protein Greek yogurt or regular yogurt. Plain will have less sugar, but vanilla yogurt is especially nice for kids.
  • Mixed berries: Use either frozen mixed berries or your favorite fresh berries. Any type of fresh fruit will go well with this granola recipe!

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Granola Breakfast Cups

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a muffin tray with 9 silicone muffin cups. Alternatively, you can grease a muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray or coconut oil. This is an important step as this will help you get the granola cups out much more easily.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the oats, mashed banana, peanut butter, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Mix until combined (it helps if you use your hands). Allow mixture to sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Split the granola mixture evenly between the 9 muffin holes.
  4. Next, use your fingers or back of a spoon to shape the granola into little cups, forming a hollow center.
  5. Bake the granola cups in the oven for 18-20 minutes.

Step 2: Fill the Granola Cups

  1. Allow the cups to cool for at least 30 minutes before removing them from the muffin pan. Otherwise they might fall apart.
  2. When they are ready to be removed from the muffin pan, carefully pop them out of the silicone cups or gently slide a paring knife along the edges of the cups, to loosen them from the muffin tin.
  3. Fill them with yogurt and top with mixed berries. Serve!

RECIPE TIPS

  • Silicone baking cups work best for this recipe to allow you to easily remove the granola cups from the muffin tin. You can use a well-greased muffin tin as well, but the cups may be more likely to stick and potentially breakfast when trying to remove them.
  • Be sure to allow the granola cups to fully cool before removing them from the tin to give them time to firm up.
  • You can use any type of yogurt to fill these peanut butter granola cups. We like to use a low sugar vanilla Greek yogurt, but feel free to sub in your favorite.
  • I cut little hearts out of strawberries using a mini cookie cutter to add some extra cuteness, but you can easily just top with chopped strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries or other fruit of choice.

Recipe FAQs

Why are my granola cups falling apart?

It’s very important to be gentle with the granola cups! They’re quite crumbly, just like regular granola. I recommend letting the granola cups cool completely on the silicone muffin liners and very gently remove them once they’re at room temperature. If you try to remove the center wells too quickly, they’ll fall apart.

Can you use instant oats?

Yes, you can. I prefer rolled oats as they have a bit more texture to them, but instant oats will work well for these muffin tin granola cups.

Can you fill the granola cups ahead of time?

For best results, fill the cups right before serving. Otherwise, the yogurt will soften the bowl and make it soggy. If you need to be able to fill them in advance, you can brush the insides of the cups with melted dark chocolate to buy yourself a little extra time.

Storage Guidelines

  • Store the granola cups in an airtight container at room temperature for approximately one week. I don’t recommend refrigerating them as they can absorb moisture and become soft.

Other Topping Ideas

These granola breakfast cups can be served in so many different ways! Here are some of my favorite options.

  • Drizzle melted peanut butter with sliced bananas and mini chocolate chips
  • Add fresh strawberries and kiwis with a drizzle of honey (older kids only)
  • Serve vanilla yogurt with sliced strawberries for twist on strawberries and cream
  • Pair fresh raspberries with chocolate chips or a drizzle of melted dark chocolate
  • Serve some homemade whipped cream with fresh berries for a summertime dessert
  • Add a scoop of homemade ice cream or 3-ingredient peach sorbet as a sweet treat

Serving Suggestions

Serve these granola breakfast cups as a nutritious side to these healthy breakfast recipes:

Recipe Variations

  • Vegan granola cups: Use your favorite dairy-free yogurt to make vegan granola yogurt cups.
  • To make nut-free: Sub in a seed butter or Wow butter for the peanut butter.
  • Add more flavor: Add a teaspoon of your favorite extract to the granola mixture, like vanilla or almond extract.
  • Make a healthy dessert: These granola cups are quite versatile! You can easily serve them with ice cream, whipped cream, or sorbet for a refreshing treat.
