Easy Easter Shredded Wheat Nests Recipe

I love coming up with healthier versions of popular treats, and these chocolate nests made with shredded wheat are one of my favorite recipes! They do contain more sugar than most of my other recipes, but in our family, we’re all about moderation and balance.

The whole grain cereal helps to offset the chocolate and mini eggs, too. They’re the perfect compromise – a little sweetness and a little fiber all at the same time.

Plus, the kids can’t get enough of them! This will easily become an annual tradition.

Why We Love These Shredded Wheat Easter Nests

  • Super easy to make: This no bake recipe is seriously simple! There are only three simple ingredients in these Easter egg nests, and most of the effort comes from crushing the shredded wheat cereal and making the nest shape. They’re even easy enough for the kids to make!

Ingredient Notes

  • Dark chocolate chips: Dark chocolate chips are lower in sugar and have a higher amount of antioxidants than milk or white chocolate. However, any type of chocolate chips will work!
  • Shredded wheat biscuits: These will need to be crushed. I prefer to use a ziploc bag and rolling pin!
  • Mini chocolate eggs: I usually use Cadbury mini eggs. Jelly beans are a good alternative in a pinch.

How to Make Easter Nests with Shredded Wheat

  1. Line a muffin tray or cupcake tray with paper liners. Set aside.
  2. Place chocolate chips into a large microwave-safe mixing bowl. Melt in the microwave, stopping every 20-30 seconds to stir the chocolate to prevent it from burning. You can also melt the chocolate on the stove in a pan set over low heat.
  3. Place the shredded wheat in a large ziploc bag and gently crush it with a rolling pin until you have small pieces. You don’t want a fine powder; we want strands that look like twigs and have a variety of textures.
  4. Add small amounts of the crushed shredded wheat at a time to the bowl of melted chocolate and stir until the shredded wheat is coated in the chocolate.
  5. Using a spoon or small spatula, divide the melted chocolate mixture among 12 of the cupcake cases, pressing the mixture into the bottom and slightly up the sides of the cups. Form a dent in the center of each cup with a spoon or your fingers so that it resembles a nest. Place three mini eggs into the center of each “nest.” Place the tray with the chocolate Easter nests into the fridge for 20-30 minutes to firm up.
  6. Serve and enjoy or store for later!

RECIPE TIPS

  • These nests are fairly hard when they first come out of the fridge. Allow them to sit at room temperature to soften for at least 10 minutes or so before serving.
  • If you’re not a fan of dark chocolate or prefer lighter colored nests, you can sub in milk chocolate chips as well.
  • If you prefer a slightly softer texture, stir in a small amount of coconut oil to the melted chocolate mixture. It will help the chocolate firm up into a crisp shell in the fridge, but it will be a little softer at room temperature.

Can you make shredded wheat nests ahead of time?

Yes! You can easily make this no bake dessert several days in advance. The no bake birds nests can either be stored at room temperature or chilled in the fridge. 

What is the best cereal for bird nests?

There are quite a few different ways to make no bake chocolate bird nests! Some people use rice krispies and melted marshmallows for rice krispie bird nests. Others recommend using cornflakes for a really crunchy texture. I prefer using shredded wheat (uncoated) as it will fill you up with fiber, and the stringy pieces look the most like a bird’s nest! 

What’s the best way to make the nest in chocolate mini nests?

Once you start melting the chocolate, it can easily get a little messy! I recommend using the back of a teaspoon to make the cavity for the chocolate nests. You’ll get a consistent shape without getting chocolate all over the place!

Storage Guidelines

  • Store the leftover wheat chocolate nests in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days. They can also be kept in the fridge or freezer for several weeks.

Recipe Variations

  • Change the chocolate: If your family prefers milk or white chocolate, those can easily be used instead for these bird’s nests. You can also look for low sugar or sugar free chocolate chips to reduce the sugar intake!
  • Shrink them: Instead of filling a regular cupcake liner, use mini cupcake liners for a bite-sized treat!
  • Stir in some nut butter: Replace a little bit of the chocolate with peanut butter for a nutty treat and extra dose of healthy fats. 
  • Fill them with fruit: Instead of Cardbury mini eggs, feel free to fill each easy chocolate nest with fresh berries. You could even add some yogurt in there too for a tasty little snack! They’ll taste great with the chocolate.
