Halloween Fruit Skewers

If you’re looking for some healthier snacks to serve up during the Halloween season, these Halloween Fruit Skewers are such a fun option!

Kids love making these, and they’re drawn to the fun colors and flavors. Plus, they also get extra fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and hydration to support their overall health.

Also, due to its fiber content, fresh fruit can also help slow down how quickly the candy and sweets affect their blood sugar, reducing the likelihood of a sugar-induced meltdown. It’s a little swap that can make a big difference!

These easy Halloween fruit kabobs would look right at home next to my monster apples or banana ghosts on these Halloween fruit trays! Or, pair them with these Halloween fruit snacks for a fun, fruit-forward Halloween spread.

Why We Love These Halloween Kabobs

  • Simple enough that the kids can make them
  • Great source of fiber, antioxidants, and other nutrients to support digestion, immunity and overall health
  • Adorable without being scary
  • Great for a kid-friendly Halloween party!
  • Customizable with different fruits and berries
  • Naturally sweet without any added sugar (minus a few candy eyeballs)

Ingredient Notes

Individually portioned ingredients for the Halloween fruit skewers.
  • Cantaloupe (cut into pumpkins or cubes): Look for cantaloupe that isn’t too ripe and mushy to make it easier to cut shapes and thread onto the skewers.
  • Berries: You’ll need blueberries and blackberries that are free of blemishes and on the firmer side so that they hold up on the skewers.
  • Candy eyeballs: If you prefer to skip the candy, you can leave these off.
  • Peanut butter or cream cheese: For binding the eyes to the blueberries.
  • Wooden or plastic skewers: I used wooden skewers, but you can use skewers with a more blunted tip for little ones.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cut the cantaloupe into slices and use a small pumpkin cookie cutter to cut out mini pumpkins. Alternatively, you can cut the cantaloupe into small cubes.
  2. Slide the cantaloupe onto the skewers, followed by a blueberry, blackberry, another cantaloupe piece, and another blueberry.
  3. Place a small dab of peanut butter or cream cheese on the back of the candy eyeballs and stick one to each blueberries. Place the kabobs on a tray and serve!

RECIPE TIPS

  • For best results, use a more solid peanut butter to help the eyeballs stick to the fruit to prevent sliding.
  • If transporting these skewers, wait until you’ve arrived at your destination before adding the eyeballs to prevent them from sliding around or falling off.
  • If you don’t have small pumpkin cookie cutters, you can also use other Halloween or Fall inspired cookie cutters, or just cut the cantaloupe into cubes.
  • If serving these to really young kids who may choke on the candy eyeballs, consider skipping them or monitoring them while eating.

Recipe FAQs

Where can you buy decorative skewers?

The star-shaped skewers in the photos are from here. I like to look for small skewers, like cocktail skewers, as they’re the perfect size for kids and are easier to hold. There are lots of options out there, but feel free to use what you can find!

How far in advance can you make Halloween skewers with fruit?

Once cut, fresh fruit tends to lose its texture and starts to look a little messy. I recommend cutting the melon pieces right before serving, if possible, or at most one day in advance. Fortunately, the berries can be rinsed, dried, and kept in the fridge, so these skewers really come together quickly.

Which fruits are best for Halloween fruit kabobs?

I like to use cantaloupe and blackberries for that classic black and orange look, but that’s really just the start. There isn’t a lot of black fruit out there, so you may need to look for purple or red instead.

These kabobs are also great with strawberries, kiwi rounds, and red or green grapes. Replace the cantaloupe with watermelon or honeydew, if you’d like. The color scheme doesn’t matter much – just have fun with it!

Storage Guidelines

  • Refrigerate the skewers in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap for 1-2 days. Avoid adding the eyes before refrigerating, as they may begin to soften up and the black pupil may start to bleed.

Serving Suggestions

These little kabobs make the perfect healthy Halloween snack to serve at parties, as an after school snack, or served alongside these Halloween Lunch Box Ideas. There are lots of options!

To really bring your Halloween feast to life, pair them with these Halloween treats.

Recipe Variations

  • Try different fruits: The orange cantaloupe and blackberries fit the Halloween color scheme perfectly, but feel free to swap out your little one’s favorite fruits! They’d also be great with green fruits, like grapes and kiwis, red strawberries, purple grapes, pineapples, and more.
  • Melt some chocolate: For a sweeter treat, dip the berries in melted chocolate or drizzle some on top for extra crunch.
  • Make different shapes: Instead of little pumpkins, use melon balls or other themed cookie cutters, like stars, ghosts, bats, candy corn, etc.
